Timothy Cole (1852-1931) was an American printmaker, born in London. He achieved fame for his exquisite wood-engraved reproductions of Italian, Dutch, Flemish, and English old master paintings, which appeared in current periodicals as well as a series of portfolios published by The Century Company.
He also used the technique to produce bookplates for individuals and institutions, such as this ex-libris for the Wednesday Book Club, dated 1921. The club’s motto reads Lucem Nobis Da in Latin, or “Give us light,” which Cole represents in this design with a glowing candelabrum.
Other bookplates by Cole (Call # BKP 128) can be viewed in Arts Library Special Collections. The Yale Bookplate Collection comprises an array of graphic works in addition to both archival and published materials.
