November 18, 2013

Edwin Davis French (1851-1906) executed over 300 bookplate commissions for both institutional and individual patrons between 1893 and 1906. This business announcement from 1896 highlights the ex-libris as French's specialty among his designing and copper plate engraving services. The design's elaborate scrollwork features a ribbon with the Latin motto Nihil sine labore or "Nothing without labor."

The Collection of Bookplates by E. D. French (Call # BKP 49) also contains original artwork, trial and artist's proofs, additional process materials, and correspondence related to either the production or the exchange of bookplates by French.

The Yale Bookplate Collection comprises an array of graphic works in addition to both archival and published materials.
