The Library of Congress Office, located in the premises of the American Embassy in Cairo, Egypt, is one of six overseas offices administered by the African/Asian Acquisitions and Overseas Operations Division of Library of Congress in Washington D.C.

The Cairo Office functions as a regional center for processing materials acquired from countries in the region of the Middle East and North Africa. The Cairo office manages the Middle East Cooperative Acquisitions Program (MECAP) through which it acquires materials for the Library of Congress and more than forty participating academic, research, and public libraries--the majority of which are located in the United States.

The bulk of materials acquired are in Arabic, followed by Turkish, Kurdish, Armenian, French, English and other regional languages and dialects spoken in the countries. Materials are published, issued or distributed by commercial publishers; academic and research institutions; central and state government organizations; cultural, political, social, religious and scientific non-government organizations; and international and regional organizations
