Emily Horning
Greetings, students!
My name is Emily Horning, and I'm here to help you find your way around the Yale Library. It's a big and complicated place, but it doesn't have to be overwhelming. My title is Director of Undergraduate Teaching and Outreach, which means I oversee a lot of the programming the library does for students in Yale College. I am also Co-Director of Library Support for the Yale Prison Education Initiative [1], through which we try to replicate many of the library services on campus to support college students inside prison.
I'm a historian by training (my graduate degree is in Medieval History from UCLA) but every subject interests me. Come tell me about your academic interests, from analytic philosophy to zoology, and I will show you collections to explore. Truly, there is something here for everyone.
Want to schedule a meeting? Start by checking my calendar here [2]; if there's a time that works for you, go ahead and book. My office is easy to find: I'm on the upper level of Bass Library in room C80A. If you come down the tunnel from Sterling, make a left at the bottom of the steps and you'll see me.
Throughout the academic year, I will:
- Keep you informed with periodic e-mail messages highlighting new resources and programs specifically for students, as well as with notices and timely reminders, such as extended Library hours during Reading Week and finals
- Answer your questions about Library policies, procedures and services, such as Zotero workshops and Borrow Direct
- Assist with finding information for your research assignments, by helping you articulate your research question, identify the best sources, and formulate your search strategies
- Support you even when you’re not around (on vacation or away from Yale doing research)
- Help you when you don’t know where to start, or you can’t think of what to do next
Things I can't do (but I'll try to help you find out who can)
- Set up your computer (i.e. NetIDs, VPN)
- Do your research, make photocopies or write your paper for you (well, I won't find someone to write your paper - that part's up to you - but I can put you in touch with The Writing Center or a writing tutor)
