Guidelines for Cataloging of Belletristic Materials (SML): Arranged by Workflow

A.  LC COPY CATLOGING: FASTCAT, STUDENTS, AND AUTHORIZED C&T ACQUISITIONS STAFF

B.  DERIVED CALL NUMBER (Staff authorized to catalog both LC and member copy)

C.  NEW CALL NUMBER (Staff authorized to assign new literature call numbers)

1.  LC copy available with classes P-PZ in 050 00.  Always use the 050 call number.

1.  If LC copy with 050 00 is found, follow procedure in A.

1.  Cataloging of literary authors new to Yale with no LC call number established.

2.  If work is a translation and the second cutter ends in 12-18, use the 050 00 call number.

2.  Member copy for literary author (PA-PZ) with or without 050 _4 or equivalent 090:  make Staff Name search.

2. Create call number by shelflisting against the Yale catalog. If trailing X numbers create a split file, ignore them when determining the sequence.

3.  If cataloged records and/or authority records are found, assign the LC author number or the Yale author number, whichever is more efficient.  If both numbers are known, prefer LC. If author is new to Orbis (no cataloged records found), follow procedure in C.

3.  Exception to above: If decision is to use PZ or if record is to be contributed as PCC, shelflist against the LC online catalog. CAUTION: PZ is not used for biography, criticism, etc. of juvenile authors

4.  For biography, criticism, correspondence, etc., always use the LC table, not the Yale modifications (i.e., do not use Z9/Z5/Z6/Z7). Shelflist biography, criticism, etc. in the LC Online Catalog and use the LC author number.

4.  For biography, criticism, correspondence, etc., always use the LC table, not the Yale modifications (i.e., do not use Z9/Z5/Z6/Z7). Shelflist biography, criticism, etc. in the LC Online Catalog and use the LC author number.
