Guidelines for Cataloging Haggadot

I. Subject Analysis

The following standard sets of subject headings should be used in most cases.  Note that the order and subdivisions of the headings vary depending on the content and the focus of the item.  Note also that because Haggadot are liturgical works rather than sacred works, the presence of a commentary is indicated solely by the work's "Subject Added Entry-Uniform Title Heading" as opposed to the work's "Subject Added Entry-Uniform Title Heading" qualified by a ǂv Commentaries. (See the Subject Cataloging Manual, H 1188)

II. Preferred title

Date (RDA 6.23.2.8):  Do not add date to the preferred title, as there is no provision for this in RDA:

Jewish liturgical works. For a Jewish liturgical work, choose the title found in the Encyclopaedia Judaica as the preferred title.

 EXAMPLE

      Amidah

      Haggadah

      Maḥzor

In the case of the Bible, it is explicitly mentioned in RDA 6.30.3.2 that the date may be added.

Language of Expression (RDA 6.11, 6.27.3, LC-PCC PS for 6.27.3): If the Hagaddah is a translation, add the name of the language in subfield $l to the authorized access point for the work.

130 0_ Haggadah. ǂl English.

If the Hagaddah contains the original expression (Hebrew) and a translation, give analytical authorized access points for the original expression and the translation.

130 0_ Haggadah.

730 02 Haggadah. ǂl English.

PCC members have the option to further differentiate translations (e.g. ǂs (last name of translator, editor, whoever)) until such time as the PS is revised.  Yale policy is to follow LC practice for now, which is to not exercise the option to further differentiate translations. However if there is a pcc-created AR with ǂs, LC practice is to accept the additional qualifier.  (LC-PCC PS for 6.27.3)
