Variable Field Deletion Policy

*Do not apply to full-level vendor-supplied records: Fields should not be deleted from full-level vendor-supplied records, such as YBP records
FIELD BY FIELD GUIDELINES
SUMMARY: DELETE FROM NON-YALE CATALOG/VENDOR IMPORT RECORDS (OCLC)
Generally applies to cataloging copy exported from OCLC. Should be used with caution when updating previously cataloged records in Orbis. Check with supervisor if it is unclear whether a local field, a 6xx with indicator 1, 3-9, or a 69x was added by Yale cataloging, especially if the item is held by a special collection; when in doubt, retain.
DELETE Recommended:
  011, 012, 029, 039, 045 (books only),  049, 069, 072,092, 096, 098, 263
DELETE: Required:
  500 (with ‡5), 510 [SERIALS ONLY! 1st indicator 0, 1, or 2], 541, 590, 599
  600, 610, 611, 630, 650, and 651 if 2nd indicator 1, 3-9 (except FAST headings)
  654, 658, 69x
  655 if 2nd indicator 1, 3-9 (except headings from English-language files such as AAT, FAST, LCGFT)
  7xx (with ‡5), 79x
  852, 866 & other MFHD fields (when WorldCat IR includes these fields in the bib record)
  All 9xx EXCEPTION: 946, 948, 949
  EXCEPTION: Retain 650 _7 with ‡2 lctgm; for Chinese Rare Books, retain ‡2 sk
  EXCEPTION: Retain 6xx _4 for East Asia and Hebraica parallel vernacular fields.

CAUTION:  If the bibliographic record was cataloged by a Yale library, whether imported from a utility or cataloged on Orbis, NEVER delete local note fields (500 with ‡5, 541, 590) or local access fields (69x, 6xx with 2nd indicator 4 or 7, all 7xx ‡5)
