Yale Library Map Department announces GIS Workshops for Spring 2012

The Yale Library's Map Department is pleased to announce the continuation of their schedule of GIS Workshops for the Spring 2012 Semester. Most workshops are held in the Bass Library Electronic Classroom L06A, in the lower level of the library (directly beneath the Thain Café). These workshops are drop-ins, so no registration is required, but seating is limited, so participants should arrive a few minutes early to ensure a workstation is available.

Below is a preliminary schedule (we are planning added offerings at the Yale Statlab at CSSSI and EPH Computer Labs, dates TBA), as well as a brief description of the individual workshops.

Intermediate GIS Skills Using ESRI’s ArcGIS Software
Description:
This workshop builds upon the skills obtained in the Introduction toGIS Mapping and ESRI's ArcGIS Software workshop. Attendees will be introduced to the concept of Geoprocessing. During the first half of the workshop, we will take a digital version of John Snow’s Cholera dataset and apply modern GIS Analysis (Voronoi Mapping, Measures of Spatial Central Tendency, IDW surface interpolation, etc…) to the examination of the infamous Soho, London Cholera Outbreak of 1854. In the second part of the workshop, we will explore the Relational Database capabilities of ArcGIS and the Geodatabase model using Toxic Release Inventory data from the EPA. Topics will include: Use of Relates & Relationship Classes, Geoprocessing of geographic data, Geocoding of street addresses, Use and Creation of Raster Data, Overlay Analysis, and Advanced Manipulation of Tabular Data. This workshop assumes completion of the preceding Introduction to Geographic Information Systems and ArcGIS for Spatial Analysis workshop, or a basic familiarity with the ArcMap/ArcGIS interface.

Advanced Skills with GIS Data and ArcGIS
Description:
This final session of the 3-part series will introduce a complete GIS Project workflow, from data collection/creation to the production of a publication quality cartographic product. During the workshop, participants will learn the basics of creation and management of Geodatabases, including the use of Geodatabase Domains and Editing Templates for control of editing workflows, as well as the georeferencing of scanned map images for “heads up” digitizing of geographic features. Participants will also learn to use the Model Builder Graphical Scripting interface to build their own custom Geoprocessing Tools. The workshop will also introduce participants to advanced cartographic methods for control of symbology, map elements and labeling in Map Layouts. This workshop assumes completion of the preceding Introduction to Geographic Information Systems and ArcGIS for Spatial Analysis workshop, or a basic familiarity with the ArcMap/ArcGIS interface.

GPS & GIS: Getting Data Out of the Field and Into GIS
Description:
Collecting GPS Data and getting it into a GIS for analysis is not always as straightforward as it might seem. This workshop will (weather permitting) take participants outside to demonstrate a basic GPS data collection workflow, including preliminary examination of GPS Satellite availability for survey planning, GPS equipment considerations and setup, use of waypoints and tracklogs for data collection and transfer, management and analysis of GPS data within the ArcMap interface. Topics will include: The GPS System, planning a GPS survey, collecting different types of GPS data in the Field, transferring GPS Data to ArcGIS using DNR Garmin, improving accuracy using occupation/averaging and hotlinking of Digital Photos using tracklogs. This workshop assumes completion of the preceding Introduction to Geographic Information Systems and ArcGIS for Spatial Analysis workshop, or a basic familiarity with the ArcMap/ArcGIS interface.

Raster! The 'Other' GIS Data
Description:
The Raster Data Model provides an effective means of characterizing spatially continuous phenomena such as elevation, temperature, precipitation and other environmental and climatic characteristics. This workshop provides a targeted introduction to the tools available in ArcGIS for creating, managing and analyzing data in raster form. Topics will include a discussion of the various types of Raster Data, properties of Raster Data, Symbolization & Display, Imagery Analysis in ArcGIS, the Spatial Analyst Toolset, extracting data from Raster to Vector, Map Algebra and Image Classification in ArcGIS. This workshop assumes completion of the preceding Introduction to Geographic Information Systems and ArcGIS for Spatial Analysis workshop, or a basic familiarity with the ArcMap/ArcGIS interface.

Mapping on the Web
Description:
This workshop will provide a high level overview of web-based GIS resources, from SimplyMap.com (which allows you to assemble, visualize and export spatial datasets) to creating a simple web-map using your own data.This workshop assumes completion of the preceding Introduction to Geographic Information Systems and ArcGIS for Spatial Analysis workshop, or a basic familiarity with the ArcMap/ArcGIS interface.
