Treasures from the Yale Film Archive: MISSISSIPPI MASALA

Mississippi Masala (Mira Nair, 1991, 118 mins)
Romance blooms for Denzel Washington and Sarita Choudhury in this culture-clash tale set around a delta motel, home to a family of Indian-Ugandan émigrés. Roshan Seth, Sharmila Tagore, and Charles S. Dutton give impeccable supporting performances in this “smart, appealing movie about displaced people and severed memories” (David Ansen). 35mm print from the Yale Film Archive.

Treasures from the Yale Film Archive: REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE

Rebel Without a Cause (Nicholas Ray, 1955, 111 mins)
New print! James Dean, Natalie Wood, and Sal Mineo give career-defining performances, roaming the teenage wasteland of Eisenhower-era Southern California. Angst is high, cars are fast, and parents—as always—just don’t understand, even in spectacular CinemaScope. “An unmissable film, made with a delirious compassion” (Dave Kehr). 35mm print from the Yale Film Archive.

THE AFTERLIGHT Screens at Yale

British director Charlie Shackleton visits Yale for a screening and discussion of his experimental feature film The Afterlight. This film exists as just a single 35mm print, hand-delivered by Shackleton to every screening around the world. "Every time it screens," Shackleton notes, "that lone print will further erode: a living record of its own life in circulation.

Introducing Treasures Screentests

Introducing Treasures Screentests, a limited series aimed at bringing films from the Yale Film Archive back to the big screen, but in a brand-new location: the newly-renovated Yale Humanities Quadrangle's Alice Cinema (Room L01, 320 York Street). In keeping with Yale's COVID-19 prevention policies, Treasures Screentests screenings are limited to asymptomatic, fully-vaccinated members of the Yale community at this time. Masks and Yale ID cards are required.

Native American Stories

Though conditions don't allow us to gather and celebrate Native American Heritage Month at in-person screenings, we hope you'll nonetheless enjoy this online offering of six documentary films telling Native American stories. These films are made available to Yale students, faculty, and staff through Yale University Library's streaming video collections, and are available throughout November.

Terrors from the Yale Film Archive II

Though the big screen remains dark for now, we've scared up another witches' brew of film frights to haunt your dreams this Halloween. Stream and scream to ten terrifying treasures from cinema's most ghoulish genre. These spectral offerings are part of Yale University Library's streaming video collections.

Before you begin, a Yale NetID is required. If you encounter problems playing the videos, try using a different web browser...if you dare!
