NEW exhibit in the East Asian Reading Room on Ch’ung-ho Chang Frankel

The East Asia Library is pleased to announce that a NEW exhibit, “Fragrance of the Past: Remembering Ch’ung-ho Chang Frankel (1913-2015)” has just been set up in the East Asian Reading Room. This special exhibit is to commemorateCh’ung-ho Chang Frankel 張充和 (1913-2015) who passed away on June 17, 2015, aged 102. Hailed as "the last talented woman of the Republic of China" (民國最後一位才女), Ch’ung-ho was a renowned poet, calligrapher, educator, and Kunqu expert.

Office Move and New Services

With the new semester starting, new things happen in the East Asia Library as well.

• Office move: Tang Li moved to SML 207A, nearby the elevator and next to the Men’s restroom on the 2nd floor of Sterling Memorial Library. The East Asia Library now has three offices, i.e. SML 213A (Haruko Nakamura), SML 213C (Michael Meng), and SML 207A (Tang).

Three New Chinese databases available!

Yale University Library now has the subscription to the following three Chinese databases from East View:

1. China Statistical Yearbooks Database 中国经济社会发展统计数据库 (CSYD) is a leading resource of statistical data in China. CSYD serves the functions of full-text browsing and downloading of statistical yearbooks, statistical research, and personalized data mining and analysis. Access is provided through Chinese and English interfaces:

New service – obtaining copies of articles from Oya Sōichi bunko!

We are happy to announce about new ILL service for copies of articles from Ōya bunko. As you many of you know, the bunko holds many treasures of post war popular magazines which are rarely held in academic libraries and hard to access. If you can identify citations of articles fromWeb Oya database and send the citation to me, we will be happy to get the articles if the magazines and journals are not held at Yale.

We are delighted to announce that, a new exhibit “Henry C. Fenn: American Chinese Language Authority & Early Western Traveler to China” has just been installed in the East Asian Reading Room (2nd floor on the Sterling Memorial Library). Henry C. Fenn (1894-1978) was a noted American authority on the Chinese spoken language who taught at the Yale Institute of Far Eastern Languages from the late 1940s to early 1960s and was also the Director of the Institute from 1952 to 1962. Born in Peiping (present Beijing), he was son of the Reverend Dr.
