Guidelines for Cataloging of Belletristic Materials (SML): Arranged by Type of Copy

LC copy with 050 P-PZ.

Use LC 050 including PZ as is.  

Note: the use of trailing X with LC 050 00 call numbers has be discontinued (November 30, 2016)

Literary author already established in Yale catalog. No LC cataloging for item in hand (member copy or requires original cataloging), but number can be derived from other records in Orbis.

Use Yale number or LC number, whichever is more efficient.

Literary author new to Yale catalog.  No LC copy available for item in hand, but author number established by LC found on NAR, or on LC 050 for another title by same author in LC Online catalog or in OCLC.

Use LC call number found in NAR, or in the LC Online catalog, or in the OCLC record.

Literary author new to Yale catalog.  No LC copy or call number available based on a search in Orbis, LC Online catalog, or OCLC.

Create call number; shelflist in Yale catalog.

Biography, criticism, correspondence , autobiography, memoirs, personal journals of the literary author (member copy or original).

1. Always use LC notation for biography, criticism, correspondence, etc.; do not use Z9/Z5/Z6/Z7.
2. Shelflist in LC Online Catalog
3. Use the LC author cutter if the author has been established by LC

Juvenile literary author (PZ) new to the Yale catalog. No LC copy or call number available based on a search in OrbisLC Online catalog, or OCLC.

Create call number; shelflist in LC online catalog.
CAUTION: PZ is not used for biography, criticism, etc. of juvenile authors.

Original cataloging coded PCC (PCC is not required)

Search LC Online catalog to verify that LC has not assigned an author number; shelflist in LC online catalog.
