Scholarly Communication and Openness Advisory Group

Charge: Reporting to the Director of Scholarly Communication & Collection Strategy and the Scholarly Communication & Collections Steering Committee (SCCSC), the Scholarly Communication & Openness Advisory Group (SCOAG) advises on workflows related to assessment, acquisition, and management of licensed open collections. This committee is operational in nature, focusing on tasks related to the storage and preservation of, and access to, open resources. Openness is defined broadly in this charge and is meant to be inclusive rather than limiting. This may apply to content freely accessible online, resources made open access through institutional APC offsetting agreements, materials openly licensed for reuse, and other content. The group will submit recommendations on workflow/policy changes to SCCSC as necessary. This charge should be reevaluated and updated as needed and no less than every 3 years due to the rapidly changing nature of the scholarly communication landscape and Yale’s evolving approach.

History: This Group is a successor to the OA Workflows Group which was convened by the Director of E-Resources and Serials Management, it operated from 2022 to early 2024. This informal group focused on the operational aspects of managing open access collections and developed workflows to ensure seamless management of open resources across multiple library units. SCOAG will take the lessons of the OA Workflows Group and apply the workflows developed there into the practical work of managing, processing, and describing open collections.

Meeting Frequency: Monthly

Membership: Due to the operational nature of this committee, membership will primarily consist of members of the E-Resources department and the Scholarly Communication Librarian. In addition, there will be one rotating position filled by a subject librarian for a term of 1 year. Subject librarians bring valuable expertise to the work and offer unique perspectives through direct contact with library users.
