YUL Policy for e-Variant record links in MARC: Third Party E-Variant Content

The approach for third party content depends on whether bibliographic records are provided by the vendor (in which case they are likely to be provider-specific), or the item is cataloged locally (in which case they would be cataloged using the provider-neutral method).

Most e-content received from third parties is accompanied by vendor records. The vendor-supplied bibliographic records for these resources are largely accepted, albeit with tweaks as necessary. Most of these records are provider-specific rather than provider-neutral. The MARC records are modified on a batch basis using MarcEdit. If the vendor does not provide metadata, or the metadata provided is deemed unsalvageable, it is created locally, preferably following the provider-neutral format.

Records for e-journals are generated by ExLibris’ Serials Solutions and left as is without any local edits, other than a 946 field for “‡a DO NOT EDIT. DO NOT EXPORT.” In all cases, a separate bibliographic record is added to Voyager for each instance of an e-resource to facilitate data management, so holdings of locally digitized items should never be added to Third-Party records, whether vendor supplied or cataloged locally. It should be noted that vendor-supplied bibliographic records should never be used as a basis for the creation of a locally created, provider-neutral, e-Variant record. Vendor-supplied records are copyrighted by the vendor and may not be used as a source of metadata for derived records.
