The result is an accumulation of about 200,000 entries arranged in a single alphabetical sequence. Cross references are not extensive, a problem which the editor says will be addressed in a forthcoming index. The first 22 fiches contain title pages and prefaces from the sources.

The scope of the Archivo reflects the historic world-wide dominion of Spain and Portugal--from the Iberian Peninsula, the Balearic and Canary Islands to Mexico, Honduras, Brazil, and Argentina to Mozambique, Macao and the Phillippines. Only 55% of the material pertains exclusively to Spain and Portugal. Included are persons from every walk of life (e.g., monarchy, nobility, military and religious figures, statesmen), individuals of diverse ethnic groups, even foreigners who became part of the fabric of local life. Additionally, there seems to have been a special effort made to include women. The entries are in Spanish and Portuguese for the most part. On the first several fiche is a list of the biographical sources used to compile the collection.

Babeuf, born in 1762, was one of the earliest French Socialists and a fervent advocate of the Revolution. This collection consists of his own writings and those associated with the nascent communist movement named after him.
These documentary materials, originally dispersed among various French archives, are at the Institute of Marxism-Leninism in Moscow. The collection includes the private papers of Babeuf. It is especially rich in materials from the first half of Babeuf's life and from the period of the Thermidor, documenting his actions after the fall of the Revolutionary Government.

The three volume index is a serious reference work in itself. It catalogs 30,000 names and lists complete bibliographical information for all books indexed. This project also includes works previously listed as "missing" in Shipton's National index to American imprints. The arrangement is by Evans bibliography numbers, items 39163-49197 being titles which have become available since Evans' work was published.
The second collection, 1801-1819, represents Shaw and Shoemaker's continuation of the Evans project, American bibliography, a preliminary checklist, 1801 to 1819, a chronological list of books, pamphlets, and broadsides issued in America from 1801-1819.

HRAF is a non-profit research corporation sponsored and controlled by twenty major university and research institutions. Its organization and implementation date back to the thirties. The information in the HRAF files is organized by ethnic and political units. The inventory of cultures in the Outline is the universe from which societies are selected for inclusion in the Area Files. The collection is comprised of labor union publications issued from 1836 through 1981. Included are institutional forms, official reports, oral debates, and statements to the public--the words and papers that have documented the founding, growth, and administration of American labor unions. The majority of the materials in the collection were assembled from the holdings of the Martin F. Catherwook Library of the School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University.
The annual update service provides, on a continuing basis, the active unions' constitutions and proceedings issued during each year. Occasionally an older constitution or proceeding is made available in an Update if it fills a gap. New unions also are introduced into the collection through Updates.

Founded in 1817 as an auxiliary of the Washington-based American Colonization Society, the Maryland State Colonization Society's primary functions were to gather funds for the parent society and to recruit colonists for the American Society's settlement, Liberia, founded on the West African coast in 1822. Ten years later, the Maryland Society decided to chart a course independent of the American Society by founding a separate colony for Maryland's free blacks, called "Maryland in Liberia." Conflicts between the colony and native tribes forced the union of Maryland in Liberia with the Republic of Liberia in 1857. The Maryland State Colonization Society ceased active colonization efforts in 1863 and disbanded in 1902. The papers consist of correspondence, minutes, financial records, records of manumission and emigration, reports of colonial agents, pamphlets and books on the colonization movement, copies of the Maryland Colonization Journal and the Liberia Herald, and census records of Maryland in Liberia. The materials shed light on race relations and socioeconomic conditions in antebellum America and are a source of information on the founding of Liberia.

Descriptions of the chivalric ideal in texts such as Castiliogne’s The Courtyer (1561), Primaudaye’s The French academie (1589) and broadsides like The Noble Gallant (c.1670). Part 2 of this project provides a wide range of rare printed sources with which to examine changes in attitudes towards manliness during the Hanoverian, Victorian and Edwardian periods. Part 3 analyzes ‘Masculinity’ through the emergence of the popular boys’ magazines from c.1850 to 1920, which played a major role in shaping ideas of masculinity in the youth of the period.

The collection contains material on the capture, trial, and release of the Amistad captives who were illegally sold into slavery. After seizing the ship that was taking them to the Caribbean, the Africans were captured by a U.S. Navy ship and imprisoned in New Haven, Connecticut. The Amistad Case was tried before the Supreme Court and the Court decided in favor of the Africans. The Boris I. Nicolaevsky collection is perhaps the single most valuable holding in the archives of the Hoover Institution on War, Revolution, and Peace. It is the product of over forty years of collecting by an emigre Menshevik, who settled in the United States in 1940. Nicolaevsky's interests focused on the revolutionary movement in Russia, with particular emphasis on the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party (RSDRP).
The Nicolaevsky Collection includes the personal papers of such leading opponents of the Tsarist regime as Mikhail Bakunin, Petr Lavrov, Georgii Plekhanov, Pavel Axelrod, Julius Martov, Iraklii Tsetereli, Viktor Chernov and Leo Trotskii. The holdings provide unparalleled documentation of the important nineteenth and twentieth-century revolutionary groups, such as the anarchists, populists, Social Revolutionaries, the Bolsheviks and the Mensheviks. They also cover political, social and economic conditions in Russia and the Soviet Union, Russian emigre life, the international socialist movement, and the important events of Russian history during the first half of the twentieth century.

The SDF was the first Marxist political organization founded in Britain. This set brings together material from the individual collections at the Marx Memorial Library, London, and the International Institute of Social History, Amsterdam, to form a comprehensive collection of pamphlets and leaflets of the Social Democratic Federation and the British Socialist Party.
GUIDE: The loose pamphlets and the photocopies have been arranged in the standard Harvester Press style by being divided into the years of publication and then listed alphabetically within each year. It has not been possible to do this with the miscellaneous bound volumes of pamphlets, and these have been filmed in a separate appendix at the end of the first section of the collection. A complete listing of documents, as they appear in both the dated section and the bound volume section, appears on the first fiche. This is followed by a complete alphabetical listing of all the pamphlets and leaflets. The material has been filmed in the order of the listing. The contents of each fiche are clearly shown on the fiche headers.

Britain played a major role in shaping modern Europe through its responses to the new political realities emerging between 1840 and 1900. Throughout this time, the great architects of Bitish diplomacy--Palmerston, Disraeli, Gladstone, Salisbury--oversaw sweeping changes in British foreign policy and the European balance of power. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert kept meticulous records that reflected the state of England's foreign relations. Queen Victoria exerted a great deal more influence on the development of Britain's foreign policy than any British monarch since. The files here produced from the Royal Archives reflect her active role in foreign affairs including the principal papers of state forwarded to the queen, her related correspondence with her ministers, and correspondence with other European sovereigns and members of their families. This resource reflects as no other the queen's view of her role in the constitutional monarchy.

The papers consist of correspondence, trustees minutes, financial records, annual reports, and photographs concerning the history of Penn School, an industrial and agricultural school for blacks established in 1862 on St. Helena Island, South Carolina. Penn School was incorporated as Penn Normal, Industrial, and Agricultural School in 1901, but relinquished its educational functions in 1948 and became Penn Community Services, Inc. The papers contain correspondence and other materials documenting the interest of many whites in black education, including such figures as Laura M. Towne, Ellen Murray, Rossa Belle Cooley, and Grace Bigelow House, principals of Penn School for most of its existence.

Sankt-Peterburgskiia Vedomosti is a valuable source for the study of Russia's eighteenth century. Under the editorship of such men as Mikhail Lomonosov and Gerhardt-Friedrich Muller, the paper's coverage was diverse, ranging from domestic and foreign affairs, science, art, industry, and other fields. During the period of Alexander II's Great Reforms, the daily was leased to an editor of pronounced liberal views, Evgenii Korshe, and it became one of the more prominent fora for progressive thought in the empire. Although its importance declined when Sankt-Peterburgskiia Vedomosti reverted to government control, during its last two decades, when it was edited by the Orientalist Prince Esper Ukhtomskii, it gave extensive coverage to Russian involvement in Asia.

The Secret Police of Hetman Skoropadsky: Papers of the Provisional Government of Ukraine. (Minneapolis: East View Information Services, 2006. 53 reels).: Film B20224
On April 28, 1918, after disbanding the Central Rada (Parliament) of the Ukranian National Republic, the Hetmanate, a short-lived provisional government of Ukraine, was installed by Germany. The coup organizers appointed the conservative general Pavlo Skoropadsky as Hetman of what was termed the Ukrainian State. The regime of Skoropadsky, accused by some Ukrainian politicians as the puppet regime of the German government, did not last long: after losing the support of Germans and Austrians, the Hetman was overthrown by the insurgent forces of Semyon Petliura and forced into exile in Germany, where he died during the Allied bombing of the World War II.

Based on the holdings of the Library of the University of Illinois, this collection of approximately 1,800 titles in 2,100 volumes reflects the development of the Spanish prose and poetical styles in literature from the earliest medieval works in Latin by Spanish authors to the rise of the Spanish vernacular in Western Europe during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Original writings by Boscan, Antonio de Guevara and Luis de Leon as well as Spanish translations of Greek, Latin and medieval classics are included. Of special interest for students of this period is the extensive collection of emblem books by Saavedra Fajardo, Horozco y Covarrubias, and Borja, and rare editions of picaresque novels by Cervantes, Aleman, and Quevedo. The collection represents works that are not only literary but which also concern religion, law, politics, the sciences, and medicine. Gustav Freytag (1816-1895), Germanist, author, journalist and cultural critic, with the aid of friends and colleagues spent decades gatherng a huge assortment of pamphlets spanning four centuries. The resulting collection includes a complete reproduction on microfiche of 6,265 pamphlets from the 15th through the 17th century. Usually brief, these pamphlets were published and circulated individually, often in the form of song, satire or fable. They became among other things, a popular weapon of rebellious theologians during the Reformation. The first fiche contains a table of contents and an index.

Women and the labour movement: conference reports and journals of the Women's Labour League and the Labour Party Women's Organisation, 1906-1977. (Sussex, England: Harvester, 1985. 247 microfiches): Fiche B2689
The Women's Labour League was founded in 1906 as a broadly based feminist group with representation from the Labour Party, trade unions, and socialist and cooperative societies. It made investigations, published a newsletter for many decades, and served as a pressure group in such areas as women's work and its regulation and safety; maternal and child care; education; housing; and institutional care for the elderly and disabled. In 1918, the Women's Labour League disappeared as a separate organization and became an integral part of the Labour Party, as the Labour Party's Women's Organisation. It continued under this name until 1977, when separate proceedings for the Women's Organisation were taken over by the Labour Party. [LC]

The Women's Trade Union League was founded in Boston in 1903 during the annual convention of the American Federation of Labor. Local branches were organized within a year in Boston, Chicago and New York. The League worked through unionization campaigns, educational programs, and legislative lobbying to improve the working conditions of women in the industrial labor force. The organization was dissolved in 1950. The records consist of correspondence, reports and printed material (1904-1955) of the National and New York, Chicago, and Boston chapters of the Women's Trade Union League; personal papers (1855-1964) of Margaret Dreier Robins, Mary Anderson, Leonora O'Reilly, Rose Schneiderman, and Agnes Nestor; and the typescript autobiography of Mary Kenney O'Sullivan.

Founded in 1969, the WEP is a program of the International Labour Organization. It conducts research programs to identify employment problems and needs of particular countries, coorperates with governmental and international agencies on employment issues, and provides advice on employment-related questions. For example, one of its concerns is the relationship between unemployment and poverty, with special emphasis on the problem of rural poverty and hunger in Africa. Another is the situation of women in rural areas and in labor markets. The WEP maintains cooperative projects in developing countries to assist rural women in their efforts to obtain permanent employment.

Different sides of life in Russian society in the second half of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century were carefully examined by zemstvo statisticians. For almost fifty years they carefully recorded data on millions of peasant household and large estates of the nobility, as well as on permanent manufacturing facilities, health care and primary education, migration, etc. The main topic of zemstvo statistical studies was the agricultural economy. Statisticians interviewed an estimated total of 4.5 million peasant families, and the list covering this work includes about 3,500 items.
