Benny Goodman: A Century of Swing

Fall 2009

This fall the Gilmore Music Library marks the centenary of the King of Swing, Benny Goodman (1909-1986), with an exhibit featuring big band arrangements, clarinet concertos by Paul Hindemith and Aaron Copland, photographs, and a wide variety of other materials, such as Goodman's honorary doctorate from Yale, a program and ticket from his famous Carnegie Hall concert in 1938, and a letter from fellow clarinetist Woody Allen.

October 1: Whiffenpoof and Whim n Rhythm Concert

The Whiffenpoofs of 2010 and Whim'n Rhythm will kick-off the Yale Whiffenpoof's Centennial Reunion with a short concert this evening (October 1) in the Sterling Memorial Library nave from 5:15 to 5:45 p.m. All are welcome to attend.

Arts Library Showcases Work of Noted Aerial Photographer Robert B. Haas

New Haven, Conn. — An exhibition of aerial photography by noted photographer Robert B. Haas is now on view at Yale’s Haas Family Arts Library, 180 York Street.

The main exhibition has a limited engagement through December, while 16 large pictures by the photographer will remain on permanent display at the Haas Library. An artist’s talk and reception will be held at 5:15 p.m. on November 20. The free event is open to the public.

Today: Sustainable Stewardship Lecture

James M. Reilly, Director of the Image Permanence Institute at the Rochester Institute of Technology, will deliver the Yale University Library’s inaugural preservation lecture on Wednesday, April 7 at 6:00 p.m. in the Sterling Memorial Library Lecture Hall (128 Wall Street). The title of Reilly’s talk is “Sustainable Stewardship: The New Thinking, Preservation Environments and Building Operations.” A reception will follow.
