Yale University Library’s Collection Development Philosophy affirms that we “collect in appropriate and available formats by adapting strategies that provide for the anticipated needs of patrons.”
In keeping with the demonstrated use of print and electronic books over the past several years, the library has adopted a policy of preferring electronic format for a growing portion of its book acquisitions.
On Thursday, January 12, 2017, the first materials were shelved in a newly renovated module at the LSF. The renovation of Mod 4, formerly occupied by the Yale University Art Gallery, was completed in November 2016. Currently, Library Collection Services staff are still in the process of labeling all of the roughly 7,500 new shelves which the reclaimed module adds to the facility’s shelving capacity.
The Mod 4 renovation at LSF continues apace and is, in fact, slightly ahead of schedule. The shelving installation is proceeding smoothly, while necessary repairs to the uprights in Module 8 have now been successfully completed.
Refurbishment of the HVAC unit which controls the mod’s temperature and humidity is still in progress. When that portion of the project is completed, the unit will be placed back online and its performance monitored for an entire month to insure that its settings meet the library’s requirements.
Progress continues with the renovation of Module 4 at the Library Shelving Facility. Most recently, ductwork and LED lighting have been installed. On Thursday, July 7th, the overhead door that will connect Mod 4 with Mod 1 will be installed. Additional ductwork drops will be set in place once the shelving uprights have been erected.
On April 11, 2016 work began at LSF to renovate Module 4 for future use by the university library system. Since it was constructed in 2002, Mod 4 has been occupied by the Yale University Art Gallery (YUAG) which utilized the space for supply storage and as a workshop area. Over the past several months, YUAG has relocated both the operations and the materials formerly stored in this portion of the Hamden facility to new quarters at West Campus.
