The Nixon Years

The Nixon Years: American Politics in the Early 1970s focuses on that tumultuous time through films made during or about the era. The series marks the 50th anniversary of Nixon's resignation, and it is presented in conjuntion with Constitution Day activities on Sunday, Sept. 15, at the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library. The Nixon Years screenings are free and open to the public.

New print! Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman star as Woodward and Bernstein, Washington Post reporters with a scoop that will take down a president. Largely created from Super 8 home movies shot by Nixon White House insiders H.R. Haldeman, John Ehrlichman, and Dwight Chapin, Lane’s documentary is “a uniquely dynamic time capsule” (David Hiltbrand) presented with “spirit, humor, and a bountiful sense of irony” (Dorothy Rabinowitz). HEARTS AND MINDS, 50th Anniversary Screening

Filmmakers in person! "One of the best documentaries ever made” (Desson Thomson), Hearts and Minds is an unflinching, Academy Award-winning examination of the Vietnam War and its vast human toll. “A cinematic essay of constant movement and provocation, a record of one man finding his way through the fog of war” (Scott Tobias). This screening will be followed by a discussion with director Peter Davis, producer/cinematographer Richard Pearce, and editor Lynzee Klingman, moderated by Yale professor and Hearts and Minds assistant editor, Charles Musser. 35mm print from the Yale Film Archive, co-presented with the Beinecke, the Poynter Fellowship in Journalism, Public Humanities at Yale, the Whitney Humanities Center, and the Yale Film and Media Studies Program.

Peter Rosen in person! Preservation premiere! Revisit New Haven’s tumultuous 1970 May Day weekend, as seen by a School of Drama student filmmaker. This documentary captures Yale in a moment of transition, when still-significant questions swirled about the role of the university in local and national affairs. Winner of the Best First Film prize at Cannes, Bright College Years was preserved in collaboration with the Pacific Film Archive. 16mm print from the Yale Film Archive, co-presented with the Beinecke.
