High Street entrance of Sterling Memorial Library to close until August 22nd

The High Street entrance of Sterling Memorial Library (SML) will be closed until Friday, August 22, to accommodate construction activity related to the restoration of the SML nave. The Wall Street entrance to SML will remain open and will serve as the primary entrance and exit for the Library. The one exception will be for anyone requiring wheelchair access – they can continue to use the High Street entrance, where a security guard will be available to assist.

Operating and Service Principles

Operating and Service Principles

The Library Shelving Facility (LSF) is designed to shelve less frequently used library materials economically and to extend significantly the useful life of such materials for the Yale University Library (YUL) System and its readers while at the same time improving the browsability of collections on campus. Sending libraries will retain control of their materials and their circulation parameters, and access to these materials will be provided for readers through daily retrieval and delivery to on-campus service sites.

Eli Express Schedule

The following schedule represents the GPS-reported arrival and departure times for Eli Express in FY 16.  Please note that Eli deliveries to the Math and Geology Libraries, as well as to 344 Winchester, occur once a day in the afternoon and are performed as part of the West Campus delivery run.

Refile Exceptions

The refile program works from a file of barcodes re-shelved/refiled at the LSF that day.  The program checks Voyager for an in-transit status.  If it finds one, the program then clears the in-transit status.  The purpose of this program is to eliminate the need for the LSF staff—who do not have access to Voyager—to discharge each item returned before re-shelving it at the LSF.

The following error/exception may be reported as a result of an item being refilled/re-shelved at LSF:

A. Error Message: No in transit found for: 39002009964819 (charged)

LSF Exception Reports

Exception Reports/Error Logs are generated from Orbis programs and from the GFA locator software. Monday through Saturday each week, programs created by Library IT run to update Voyager records representing items that have been either accessioned or re-shelved (refiled) at the LSF.

Permanent Withdrawals from LSF

Procedures for Transferring Material Shelved at the LSF to an On-Campus Library

Standard Procedure for Requesting Items Shelved at LSF be Permanently Returned to an On-Campus Location
(LSF Permanent Withdrawals)

1. An authorized staff member on-campus requests the item(s) that she/he wishes to have permanently withdrawn by placing a call-slip request.

Special Collection Deliveries

In 2007, as a result of a formal process improvement initiative, a number of innovations were introduced that permitted better tracking and greater security for special collection materials being transported by LCS.  Items are now tracked during the transport process by making use of functionality available in the LSF inventory software. By using the Maintain Transit Bin function, LCS staff are able to link discrete items to specific transport containers and then create a manifest detailing the contents of every outgoing transport container.
