Selections from the New Global Health Collection at the Medical Library

The Medical Historical Library recently acquired over 2600 global public health and safety posters, representing 56 countries and multiple languages. On display are selections from this collection, promoting a variety of public health messages, including anti-drug and anti-smoking campaigns, maternal and child health, population control, clean water,and prevention of diseases such as malaria and cholera. Posters issued by the World Health Organization (WHO) and Doctors without Borders are also included.

The Sexual Revolution and Movie Thrillers with Medical Themes

Now on view at the Cushing/Whitney Medical Library, 333 Cedar Street.

Birth control, more widely available with the advent of “the pill,” is the subject of these large posters from 1968-69. Marketed to college students, the posters’ messages mocked politicians and traditional values in clever, often hilarious, visual statements. Examples of posters for popular international film thrillers with medical themes include Les Yeux sans Visage [Eyes without a Face], a classic horror film about face transplant (1960), and I Feel Like Screaming, 1990, the subtitled version of Chce mi sie wyc, set in Poland during the period of martial law 1981-83.

8 Interesting Objects Selected from the Medical Historical Collections

This exhibit, currently on view in the Cushing Rotunda at the Yale Medical Library, includes the 1971 printing of Our Bodies Ourselves which sold for 35 cents, the first illustrated book on gymnastics and sports medicine published in 1569, a medical manuscript from Vietnam, and The Pathology of Drunkeness, 1841.

University of San Diego Curation Pilots: Planning for the Future

Presenter: David Minor, Director of Digital Preservation Initiatives, UCSD Library

David will give an overview of UCSD's current initiatives in digital curation and preservation and discuss future plans for providing service in the rapidly changing world of data-intensive research. Everyone is welcome to attend. Coffee will be provided, and there will be plenty of time for questions and discussion.

David Minor works at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), where he is the Director of Digital Preservation Initiatives and Interim Head of the Research Data Curation Program at the UCSD Library. In these roles he helps define current and future work needed for the preservation of vital resources. He is also the program manager of Chronopolis, a national-scale digital preservation network. In addition to his digital preservation duties, he is lead for the Curation Services Program in the Research Cyberinfrastructure Initiative on the UCSD campus.

Yale Library introduces the new Course Reserves Management System

The Yale University Library has implemented a new course reserves management system that will bring significant improvements to the course reserves service.

Using the new system, students will be able to access all of their reserves materials – both print and electronic – in the same place. It will enable faculty to follow the status of reserves requests, copy materials from previous classes, and track the number of times an e-reserves reading has been accessed. It will also allow course reserves lists to be added from within Classes*v2, a platform which provides the Yale community with a powerful, integrated set of Web-based tools for teaching, learning, and sharing information.

Graduate students interested in librarian-led tours of Sterling Memorial and Bass libraries are welcome to join any of the four tours being offered this Wednesday and Friday. Reflections on the First Anniversary of the Library's Digital Strategy: A Conversation with University Librarian Susan Gibbons

Time flies. It is one year since Susan Gibbons announced a digital strategy for Yale University Library, addressing issues of policy and governance, technical infrastructure, and metadata standards. There's a lot more to digitization than meets the eye, such as the need for digital preservation and the navigation of legal issues. Susan Gibbons, the University Librarian, recently had a conversation with Elizabeth Beaudin, Director of Digital Initiatives, about this first year. A new class explores links among Yale's exceptional Himalayan collections

Yale Himalaya Initiative Program Director and Associate Research Scientist in the South Asian Studies Council Mark Turin has been granted a Fellowship for Academic Year 2013–2014 to develop a hands-on and collaborative class exploring the links among Yale’s exceptional collections from and about the Himalayan region.

Yale’s holdings (including those in the Library) of Himalayan materials are rich and largely unexplored. Professor Turin will enhance his course with technology to assist students in producing a crowdsourced open catalog, which will be folded back into the existing catalog holdings and made visible through ORBIS. Through the class, and through the use of appropriate technology, students will create catalog entries and virtual collections of Yale’s holdings that are media-rich and populated with links and metadata, adding context to these little-documented Yale collections.

The process will be experimental and challenging for students who rarely have the pleasure of working with primary materials during their undergraduate careers, and will require them to evaluate different sources of information, weigh their values and legitimacies, and bear in mind the enduring residue of their coursework in the archive.

The course is scheduled for Fall 2013 under course numbers SAST 363, EAST 363, ANTH 317, and HSAR 479.
